What Is DisplayLink, and Why Do Portable Dual Screens Need It?
If you have researched portable dual screens, you have run into the word DisplayLink and the driver install that comes with it. It is the single most misunderstood part of this product category, and the reason some setups work on a MacBook Air while others cannot.
Here is what it actually is.
What is DisplayLink?
DisplayLink is a technology that sends a display signal over USB as ordinary data, and then reconstructs the picture on the computer using a software driver. It does not use the graphics output built into your laptop.
A normal external monitor works the other way around. The laptop's graphics chip produces a video signal and pushes it out through a port that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode. The monitor just displays what arrives.
That difference sounds academic. It has one very practical consequence.
Why does DisplayLink get around the display limit?
Laptop chips have a fixed number of display pipelines built into the silicon. Every MacBook Air with an M1, M2 or M3 chip has exactly one available for external displays. Plug in a second ordinary monitor and there is no pipeline left for it, so it mirrors the first or stays black.
DisplayLink never asks for a pipeline. The picture travels as data over USB, and the driver draws it using the CPU and integrated graphics instead. Because the built-in limit is never involved, it does not apply.
This is why a portable dual screen can give a MacBook Air two independent extended displays when two separate monitors cannot.
What does DisplayLink cost you in practice?
Three things, and they are worth knowing before you buy rather than after.
A driver install. Unavoidable on Apple Silicon. It takes a couple of minutes and is done once. On recent macOS versions it also has to be approved manually under Privacy and Security, including after major system updates.
Some CPU load. Drawing the picture in software uses processor time. For documents, spreadsheets, browsers, code and terminals this is not noticeable on any modern machine. Under heavy sustained load, such as compiling, it adds to what the processor is already doing.
Latency and frame rate limits. Small, but real. Enough that DisplayLink is the wrong choice for gaming, and for colour-critical video work where you need an exact signal path.
Do Windows laptops need DisplayLink?
Usually not. Most Windows laptops from 2020 onwards have enough display pipelines to drive two external screens directly, so a dual screen setup can connect without any driver at all.
Some models are exceptions, particularly lighter machines with limited integrated graphics. If in doubt, check the specifications for the number of supported external displays rather than the number of USB-C ports.
Does a docking station solve the same problem?
No, and this trips people up regularly. A standard docking station splits one connection into several ports, but the display signals still come from the laptop's own graphics output. A MacBook Air behind an expensive dock still drives one external screen.
Only docks and screens that contain DisplayLink hardware get around the limit, for the reason explained above.
Should you avoid DisplayLink?
Avoid it if you game, edit video professionally, work with colour-critical material, or cannot install software on a managed work laptop. In those cases the trade-offs are real and you should choose a setup that uses the laptop's native display output, even if that means fewer screens.
Accept it if you want more screen area for ordinary knowledge work on a laptop that cannot otherwise provide it. For that use, which is most use, the trade-offs are close to invisible and the benefit is not.
In short
DisplayLink turns a hardware limit into a software problem, and software problems are solvable. That is the whole reason a folding dual screen can work on a laptop Apple designed to drive one external display.
